Imaginary Gods and Science

What is science? It isn’t just using technical methods to find results. It is actually better described as a method. It is a method of carefully, thoroughly and systematically gathering and assessing information using logic and reason to evaluate the results. It is about always being open to both new information and to challenge. Only the most accurate and robust conclusions survive.

No proposed proof of the existence any of the vast number of gods that are believed to exist has ever survived scrutiny.

This lack of proof is why people are told to have “faith”. But faith is simply a requirement for you to close your mind to evidence and reason in favour of one or another set of stories.

It is proven that humans have evolved only recently in the history of the planet, with the planet having formed approximately 4,500,000,000 years ago, while humans only evolved approximately 300,000 years ago.

It is also proven that the planet itself is revolving around a star in a galaxy of hundreds of billions of stars, and that this galaxy is just one in a universe of billions of galaxies.

In the life of the planet, vast numbers of other species have evolved and died out, long before the first humans evolved. This included a period of considerably more than a hundred million years when dinosaurs evolved and populated the planet, before dying out. Other species then evolved leading through various predecessor Hominin species to Homo sapiens (humans).

Some people say that evolution is just a theory. In reality, evolution is a fact. The dinosaurs, the many predecessor Hominin species which led to humans, they are all proven and the timelines very well described. The “theory” of evolution is simply the theory which explains the observed facts of evolution. Just like the theory of gravity explains the observed fact of gravity and is not just some wild guess that gravity exists.

None of the god stories explain evolution or the place of the earth in the cosmos for the simple reason that these things were not known to the people who imagined these stories. Therefore most gods are very planet earth and human focused.

Out of necessity, imaginary gods have to share a few common traits - they do not to prove their own existence, they rely on "faith" and "belief" in stories which are passed on by believers, they chose to communicate solely through dreams, especially the dreams of preachers, monks, gurus, prophets or chosen ones, and the miracles or answered prayers that are attributed to them are either in the distant past or are attributable to normal events.

Feelings, wanting, wishing for, longing for, does not influence reality. The desire for your religion to be true in no way makes it actually true. This goes for each and every one of the thousands of gods and religions.

Making a fantastic claim, that you know the god which created the universe and humans, requires proof. It is not necessary for non believers in whichever god you are referring to, to provide proof to the contrary (they are not making a fantastic claim, they are simply questioning the claim made about the god).
